This summer we returned to Cythera for a second time and I must say, it was among the best decisions we’ve made.
Whenever we travel, we usually explore a new destination, but the memories we had of Cythera were too strong to resist. So this year, we gave the island another chance.

And it delivered. Out of all our summer travels so far, Cythera stands out as the most beautiful island we’ve ever visited. It blends wild natural beauty, crystal-clear seas, hidden and organized beaches — and most importantly, warm hospitality.
Cythera is not your average small island. It hosts several villages that provide essential services without losing its character or pace of life.
🏖️ Must-visit beaches
- Kaladi: the most “off-the-beaten-path” among those we visited. A staircase descent leads you to a scenic beach and a secluded cave at its edge.
- Fyri Ammos (Red Sand Beach): red sands, a beach shack with sunbeds, and emerald green waters. The drive down is doable (though a bit rough).
- Melidoni: by far the easiest to reach by car, paved road almost all the way, with amenities and natural rocky platforms to dive from.

Lighthouse & Villages
The Moudari / Spathi Lighthouse is one of Cythera’s architectural highlights. Built in 1901, its tower rises to 25 meters in height. t is often noted as one of the largest lighthouses constructed by the British in Greece.
Two of my favorite villages:
- Chora of Kythera: classic island alleys, quaint shops, bars, restaurants — and atop it all, the imposing Kythera Castle.
- Avlemonas: such a magical little village. The sea seems to flow right into the rock-cut steps of the village. It starts shallow and gradually deepens into crystal waters.

A practical note: we always found parking. Not once did we struggle to park the car.
We stayed at Hotel Petradi , a lovely spot with a pool and breakfast, very hospitable and well located so we were never far from the island’s highlights.
To get there, you head to Neapoli and catch the ferry, it’s about a 1½ hour ride.
Cythera will forever hold a place in my heart, one of the best choices for a Greek summer getaway, especially if peace and relaxation are your goal.
